London, UK (Pak PRwire): PTI UK observed the Kashmir Solidarity Day on Feb 05 2010 with a number of Kashmiri leaders in the UK. The people of Kashmir are struggling for their right to self-determination in line with the United Nations resolutions.
This day was observed by the Kashmiris & Pakistanis in many countries across the world including UK where the Pakistani community reiterated its moral & political support to the people of Kashmir. Chairman PTI Mr. Imran Khan has clearly stated that Kashmir is an occupied territory as opposed to a disputed territory and that Kashmiris should be allowed to decide their future via the ballot. If we believe in justice and freedom then we need to highlight this issue at every opportunity.
Since independence in 1947, there have been 3 wars between Pakistan and India over Kashmir and despite many attempts at dialogue between the two countries, there is no resolution in sight. There can be no peace in the region till the Kashmir issue is resolved. Today there are approx 600,000 Indian troops occupying Kashmir and nearly 100,000 Kashmiris have died in this struggle. On Feb 05 2010, another 16 year boy was shot dead by the Indian army – the boy was playing cricket. Also over a period of time, Indian security forces have picked up a large number of male population in occupied Kashmir. This human rights’ violation needs to be highlighted to the Human Rights Commission especially by those living in democratic countries like the UK.
It is incumbent on the international community to help find a solution and stop further blood shed of innocent victims as well as growing terrorism. Although President Obama had recognized the Kashmir issue as a major cause of contention between India and Pakistan, no headway has been made to deal with the situation.
The people of Kashmir are a peace loving community however they have been pushed to their tether – they have taken to militancy in order to be able to determine their own destiny. The International Security Council was able to find a resolution for Kosovo & East Timor so similarly it should be able to fulfill its obligations to the people of Kashmir. Since there is a large population of Kashmiris settled in Great Britain & in the US, we expect both these governments to take a more proactive role in bringing security, peace and integrity to the region based on the aspirations of the people of Kashmir.
