Islamabad: The Federal Minister for Environment Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi has said that the environment as a subject would be included in the curriculum to create awareness in the younger generation about the pressing environmental concerns and to motivate them to be the part of the efforts for addressing the environmental issues. The preparation of the syllabus from Class-I to Class-XII is almost in the final stages and would be incorporated.
He expressed these views while addressing the school children during a plantation campaign on the subject “The Green Generation” at Rose and Jasmine Garden here today. The event was organized in connection with the celebration of Earth Day by the project Environmental Education in School through Roaming Teachers of the Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the PIEDAR, Idara-e-Taleem-o-Agahi and CDA.
The Minister said that the children are the urgent of change therefore we are aiming to involve school children for raising awareness on environmental issues. He said that we have planned to establish green clubs at schools to motivate the students for environmental awareness. He said that a comprehensive awareness campaign would be involving the religious leaders and social activist for promoting the cause of environmental conservation.
The Minister said that Ministry of Environment has forwarded a summary to the Federal Cabinet to retrieve the forest land being used for other purposes like housing colonies. He said that the forest policy is being reviewed and the new National Forest Policy would be finalized with the consultation with the provincial forest departments and other stakeholders. He said that 70 million plants are being planted during the ongoing spring planting campaign 2009. He said that an effective monitoring system is being evolved to ensure the survival of the planted trees.
Speaking on the occasion Secretary Environment Kamran Lashari said that all the segments of the society should work together for preserving the environment and promote the rationale use of natural resources. He said that the children are true catalyst to bring a change for clean and green environment. He said that we should establish a relationship of care with the trees as our religion teaches us to plant and protect trees as well as promote cleanliness in our surroundings. He said that we should all pledge today that there would be no littering from now onward. Director General Environment Javed Ali Khan also spoke on the occasion.
